An 8v Mk2 GTI with a probably rusted undercarriage and a motor/transmission combo you can pickup for about 500$ with suspension design shared with the Mk3?
Personally, I think he overpaid by about 300.

the car was lowered, the paint of immaculate, and the lights and everything were in decnt condition (clean, un cracked) plus the wheels
i think it was worth the 800 pounds.

The thing I've noticed about a lot of those top gear cars is they are superficially made a bit better for TV. Yes, they do actually buy POS used cars but I bet some fresh paint was used on all of them to some degree (maybe a new door for hammond) so they wouldn't look like total crocks. I'd buy a Mk3 8v GTI for 800 quid, but not a Mk2. 16v? That's another story.

......That's my point - that paint would not look that good at 174k miles. They repainted parts of the car and probably fixed some edge/spot rust before filming.
